Websites for private tutors and music teachers
Everything a parent checks, on one page.
A website for private tutors and music teachers: your subjects and exam boards, your teaching background and DBS, your prices and the spaces you have left this term. From £180 a year, live in 7 days.
What your website needs to do.
Subjects, levels and exam boards
Each subject and level you teach, with the boards: AQA, Edexcel, OCR or the 11+. Parents look for their child’s board first.
Your teaching background
Years teaching, your degree, and QTS if you have it. Only what you hold, written as plain facts.
Your DBS, said properly
“Enhanced DBS, on the Update Service, certificate available to see.” I don’t put a picture of the certificate on the site, because it carries your personal details.
Spaces this term
A line like “two Thursday slots left for September”, and a button to book a free chat or a trial lesson.
Prices and your missed lesson policy
Price per lesson, blocks of lessons, and what happens when a lesson is missed or cancelled, so nobody argues about it later.
For music teachers
Instruments and voice, grades and exam boards like ABRSM, Trinity and RSL, where lessons happen, and whether you charge by the term or pay as you go.
What people check before they book.
Most of your customers will hear about you first, then look you up. These are the things they look for.
- Teaching background, and whether you know their exam board
- QTS, if you have it
- An enhanced DBS on the Update Service
- Reviews from other parents
- A trial lesson or a free chat first
- Where lessons happen: your home, theirs or online
- The price per lesson, and for more than one child
- What happens when a lesson is missed
Rules worth knowing.
Not legal advice, just the things that change what your website should say. Each one links to the official source.
You can get your own enhanced DBS
Since January 2026, self-employed tutors can apply for their own enhanced DBS check through an umbrella body, and keep it current on the Update Service. A parent can’t apply for it on your behalf.
GOV.UKNo Ofsted registration for one or two subjects
Tutoring or coaching children aged 3 and over in one or two activities doesn’t need Ofsted registration. Music lessons count as one.
GOV.UK childcare registration exemptionsSafeguarding guidance names private tuition
The government’s guidance for out-of-school settings covers private tuition and music lessons. A short safeguarding statement on your site shows parents you’ve read it.
Department for EducationThe data protection fee
Sole traders who keep personal information, like pupils’ names and parents’ numbers, usually need to pay the ICO a data protection fee unless they’re exempt. The ICO has a short check to find out.
ICOMost tutors and music teachers start with one page.
One page fits most tutors: subjects, prices, your DBS and a way to book. If you teach several subjects or levels and want a page for each, four pages give them room.

WhatsApp meQuestions tutors and music teachers ask me
I already get students from Tutorful and Tutor Hunt. Why would I need my own site?
Platforms find you new students. Your site is for the parents who hear about you and look you up, and there’s no fee on those lessons. Keep platform students on the platform, under its rules.
Should I put my DBS on the website?
Say the level, that it’s on the Update Service, and that parents can see the certificate. Don’t upload a picture of it. Since January 2026, self-employed tutors can apply for their own enhanced check.
Can parents book and pay on it?
Yes. A booking link for a free chat or trial lesson, and a payment link for blocks of lessons. Or keep it simple with WhatsApp.
Will I show up for “maths tutor Reigate”?
Local searches lean on your Google profile, plus a site that names your subjects and the towns you cover. Nobody can promise rankings.
Can I put parents’ reviews up?
Yes, real ones, with permission. First names only, and never a child’s name or school.
What happens in the summer when I stop teaching?
The one-page plan is £180 a year, so there’s no monthly bill to pause. The domain stays in your name.
I teach music from home. Do I have to put my address up?
No. Show the area, and give the address once a lesson is booked. Your Google profile can hide it too.
I’m on MusicTeachers.co.uk. Can I move those pupils to my site?
No. Its rules say pupils who found you there book through it. Use your site for pupils who find you another way.
How much does it cost?
From £180 a year for one page, or £59 a month for four pages. Nothing to pay until it’s live, and no VAT to add.
