Handyman websites for one-person businesses

The jobs you do, and what they cost.

A website for a one-person handyman business: your jobs and prices, a minimum charge, before and after photos, and a way for people to send you photos of the job. Live in 7 days.

Example: Tom Can Fix It, a handyman in Crawley. Made up for this page.

What your website needs to do.

Jobs grouped the way customers think

Put up, put together, fix, paint, outside. People look for their job, not for a trade name.

What you don’t do

A plain line saying no gas work and no new electrical circuits builds trust, and keeps you on the right side of the rules.

Prices and a minimum charge

An hourly rate and minimum, or “from” prices for TV mounting, flat-pack and shelves. It answers “how much?” before anyone asks.

Before and after photos

Phone photos are fine. They’re what people look at first.

Send a photo of the job

A form or a WhatsApp message with photos, so you can price a small job without a visit.

Your waste carrier number

If you take away customers’ old furniture or rubble, show your registration. It protects them as well as you.

What people check before they book.

Most of your customers will hear about you first, then look you up. These are the things they look for.

Rules worth knowing.

Not legal advice, just the things that change what your website should say. Each one links to the official source.

Taking things away needs registering

A customer’s old furniture, fittings or rubble counts as someone else’s waste, which needs an upper tier waste carrier registration. Customers can be fined for using someone who isn’t registered, so show the number.

No gas work without Gas Safe

Don’t list or hint at gas jobs unless you’re Gas Safe registered.

Some electrical work must be notified

Swapping a socket on an existing circuit usually doesn’t need notifying. New circuits, and work in bathrooms or gardens, must be done by someone in a competent person scheme or notified to building control.

GOV.UK Approved Document P

Most handymen start with four pages.

Four pages fit most handymen: Home, Jobs and prices, Recent jobs, and Contact. If you only want one link to post in local groups, a one-page site works too.

Questions handymen ask me

Do I need a website if my Facebook page is full of before and after photos?

Maybe not, if work is steady. But not everyone is on Facebook, and local groups get crowded. Your Google profile needs a website to point to, and the site is one link that belongs to you.

Should I put prices on my site?

Yes: an hourly rate and minimum, or “from” prices. Clear prices put off some of the people only after the cheapest quote.

Can I say I do small electrical and plumbing jobs?

Like-for-like swaps, usually yes. New circuits, bathroom electrics and anything to do with gas, no, unless you’re registered. Your site should only list what you can do.

Do I need a waste carrier licence to take stuff to the tip?

If it’s the customer’s old stuff or building waste, yes: upper tier, £191.02 for three years. Show the number, because customers can be fined for using someone who isn’t registered.

Do I need insurance as a handyman?

Public liability isn’t a legal must, but people ask for it. Employers’ liability is required once you take someone on.

Is Checkatrade or MyBuilder better than a website?

They charge for membership or leads. Enquiries from your own site come only to you. You can do both.

Why isn’t my website showing up on Google?

For local work, your Google profile matters most. Writing up jobs with photos helps over months. Nobody can promise rankings.

How much does it cost?

From £180 a year for one page, or £59 a month for four pages. Nothing to pay until it’s live, and no VAT to add.
